In researching medical history, I happened upon a very interesting act of fusing of two people performed by Saints Cosmas and Damian. They were twins and early Christian martyrs born in Arabia who practiced the art of healing. Now known as the patron saints of surgery, their most famous miraculous exploit was the grafting of a leg from a recently deceased Ethiopian to replace a patient’s ulcered leg, an act that was the subject of many paintings and illuminations.
